Hey guys, I just received permission to post this. It's been in the works for a couple months and just wrapped it up. It's late and I'm sure I've left out some details, please post questions and I'll do my best to answer them.
I just got back from NYC where we shot a piece with Lucasfilm that will be airing on national TV, promoting The Clone Wars series. They were using me as C-3PO and my friend Kris Sanders' most recent R2D2. R2 was fully operational and is amazing! When we walked onto the set (which looked like the bridge of a starship) the crew all dropped what they were doing on another scene and came over to meet the droids and take photos. It was a great yet surreal experience.
I'd like to thank Don Bies for all his help and advice prior to this shoot and over the years. He is always helpful, his industry experience priceless and a real friend to droid builders.
The first day was shorter while they did lighting tests, trying to decide if R2's dome reflected too much of the stage equipment. In the end he was fine. The second day was 15 hours. It went from 6:30am to 9:30pm and I spent a cumulative total of about 11 hours in the suit. A new, and slightly painful record for me! The crew really treated us like celebrities and Lucasfilm made sure we were well taken care of and that the droids weren't asked to do anything they wouldn't normally do in the Star Wars Universe.
Since I do the voice, I stayed in character for about the first 2 hours, between takes and all, until I took my first helmet break. After that I'd just do it while the camera rolled and occasionally for fun. The crew really had a lot of fun with it. The young broadway actor who played the Jedi was a huge Star Wars fan and said "This is the coolest thing I've ever done!" I had to agree....
Sanders' R2 is the quietest, smoothest-running R2 I've ever seen. He did an amazing job on him. There wasn't a single malfunction - no parts falling off, no tipping over, no failing electronics, or noisy motors. This little R2 unit really is in first class condition.
I could never have dreamed it would come to this. It's not a full Star Wars set, but it's the closest I've ever come. It was a really cool experience, working with some very nice folks.

Re: Trooper TK409
Don't blame me...I just point the camera! The best part was having Anthony Daniels ask me, "Can you take some pics with my camera?". Of course the answer was YES! Watching Senna trying to drive R2 while hiding behind the curtain was pretty amusing as well...never a dull moment with these guys!
