R2-Lite, anyone?
I've wanted to build an Artoo for many years. Made a number of attempts that ended in disaster.
I know that I'm reasonably skilled witha background in set & props, but I don't have half of the talent that most R2 builders have, so I'm thinking about making what I call R2-LITE.
This will look exactly like the droid (no skimping on aesthetics), but will be literally:
* Lightweight
* Inexpensive build
* Immobile
* Working lights
* Sounds (provided by CD Walkman inside)
Does anyone have thoughts/ideas/views on how this can be achieved? I'm not after the full resin re-casts, just scratchbuilding for most of it. No opening panels etc.
Hopefully this can all be documented and standardised so that anyone like me who wants a display droid can assemble it from a database or list of easily available parts with easy instructions, and not spend a small fortune on it.
This is not to take anything away from the far far superior droids that are being made by some incredibly skilled builders out there. A 'halfway house' project as regards cost and functionality would be a great way of giving people some of the fun and perhaps learning some of the skills in the process.

Re: R2-Lite, anyone?
Hopefully you'll find some answers here, but the R2Builders have lots of alternatives and options for building R2 in various levels of weight, expense & materials. There is tons of info on the Yahoo group. You might also try http://www.Astromech.net
