I've been working, well, where I can find the work. I should be local for a couple of months. Good to be home. Back to business again. I'm sorry for the creeping production lately, just can't help it, gotta work. Anyways, my cell will work here in Ohio, probably call you today Brad, look for me. Since I've been gone my B-9 has taken a tumble, it's terrible. Must replace the torso and part of the radar. I also found the arm for 3po had been knocked off of my desk and crack along thee sides. Oh well, i'm just glad to be back home. Anyways, I hope everyone had a good thanks giving and everthing is getting better. I have to admit your right simon I winced during some of these proceedures. I have summarized that I want rubber/silicone and plaster 2 piece molding applications. I certainly expected most to partly work from past experiences. I think it's the scale that over whelmed me. I'm use to difficult situations and unsolveable problems, but this is an art that you have to stick with to succeed. I definately will complete this project. I am still acessing damage to my little studio thanks to my kids and their friends who are now banished from the robot room. I hope the mess I found is the only big thing. Thanks for the advice and information, I am very impressed with the molding techniques and I may ask a few more questions. Thanks Simon, I appreciate it. I work in the movie fx industry and i have made many things that have the same result your developing. Im not sure if you have had much progress with the rubber molding, i just thought i would join the forum to offer some advice. I have to say i winced when i saw you pasting on plaster onto that beautiful torso! I applaud your seemingly fearless experimentation, but i may have some interesting ideas you could use. There is a product you can use called RTV silicone, its nothing like the bathroom sealant, so ignore that horrible stuff its full of acetic acid and will bugger your lungs and screw your castings after 2 or 3 runs. Room Temperature Vulkanisation silicone comes in grades of stiffness/hardness or "shore" for rigid accurate molds like you are after shore 40 would be good, youll also need a jacket mold!!?? The process is this....well i could explain John but a few pictures are woth a thousand mistakes http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=47324&highlight=matrix+mold You would obviously have to fix down each side of the torso to some board with the torso raised off at least 3 inches for flashing, then blocking off all around with soft casting plaster mixed with vermiculite, this will be heavy enough to aid in keeping the torso from shifting when silicone is poured into jacket mold. A silicone mold like this will last you for 100 runs and well made/looked after one will last forever. If you have any questions ill try my best to answer them. I hope your still planning to stick with this, your doing a beautiful job so far. I haven't been able to do a whole lot with the torso. I still have the meeting with the fiberglass guy, when available. Until then I was able to get on another 4 layers of primer today. After its completely dry I will take it down with 220 Grit sandpaper. Until I can get with the fiberglass guy, I am continuing on to other pieces. I'm gonna keep pluggin' away. I did however, go ahead and get started again on the forearm. The after photos after a couple coats of primer are too blinding for my camera. I will also be painting this piece in silver/chrome and clear on top coat. Matter of fact we had scheduled a tear down and rebuild, but I happen to run into a very talented fiberglass mold guy. He builds Gotham Cruisers, B-9's and other items for people. I found he's only about 15 minutes from my house, so i'm going to check out his batmobiles and hope and pray he has a simple solution. We may be able to reattach, and slightly bend most into the proper shape, but i'm pretty sure the neck (rear), will have to come off and be reattached. Here's a link for some of that http://www.geocities.com/johnfosterfochaser/torso39.html Notice the difference in the side/rib area and the shoulder. Almost a half an inch! Happy 4th everybody! It's a good day for me because i'm over my extreme depression. Why would I be depressed you asked? As you may know I've been working on this 3po torso for like 15 years. Anyways, I kept having problems lining the copy with the back half of the original torso. After this latest attempted I found that the original torso halves do not match up! Darn it! I don't know why I didn't check before, i'm still learning I guess. How can this be? I contacted a good friend, my mentor Bondo Jack. Bondo jack is a living legend who has worked on all types of bondo related items. He told me the reason the two pieces don't match is because I used differn't amounts of bondo. During the curing process it heats the other bondo around it, cause it to warp. I didn't see any warping, bending of any kind. It didn't show up until I cut the torso in two halves. I guess I should have been smart enough to match the pieces up to make sure they would go back together properly. That depressed me. After all this work!!! That's okay, I know what the problem is. I talked to a couple of guys about it and they are willing to come over and help me reattached the two halves, make repairs and make the two-two piece molds. I"m pretty excited. I know the molds were actually good molds and the problem was from a secondary cause. This can and will be fixed, soon. I'm taking a week off from robots. I should have realized this much earlier. My large latex mold had actually warped when I added resin causing it not to fit the back half of the original mold. Man that hurt! Jedi probably felt that one. I should have made a egg shell backing, but was guaranteed that I would not have to worrie about sagging or warping. I'm going for broke. My wife said surprisingly, "Spend the money." I will make a 3 piece fiber glass mold with nuts and bolts on all seems. I'm doing the front and back. I did however complete the mold for the left shoulder bell. Gonna pop it loose today. I did a little more sanding on the torso, but decided to take a little break and work on a shoulder bell. This is an original piece graciously sent to me by Brad C. I took the small shoulder bell and exploded it to fit my arm and shoulder size. Here is the piece with first coat of primer. I will add two to three more coats without sanding. This will only thicken the primer making it easier for me to take down completely with the 220 Grit. I may finish the front torso tonight. I was only able to do a little bit of sanding on the front of the torso, but i'm pretty darn close to done. I had to rebuild my pond this weekend and gp to a baseball game. I have volunteer weekend coming up at my kids school. Man oh man, summer must be here! I had too many visitors to get much done. I did however get a very light coating of bondo over the fiberglass to fill in the imperfections. I also didn't get enough practice with my new sander. I'm dangerous until I get the knack. I ended up putting on about three applications, took it down so far with the sander, than hand sanded to do the job right. That's okay, i've learned a lot and I will do some more on it tomorrow. They cut my hours down at work, so i'll be more available to get some stuff done. Oh yeah, here's a pic. Finally got a camera too. My cell! I did get to use my new orbital hand sander yesterday on torso no. 3. Because I put the resin/glass on so thick I was able to simply sand out quite a few inperfections. I also added a three-fourths amount of fiberglass to the others. I sanded that down and will do some more sanding after coffee. I don't have any pics yet. My expensive camera has either been dropped or mis used because its eating batteries as soon as I put 'em in! My wife took my cell phone out of town by accident, my Mavica can't down load pics on new computer. I'll figure out a way to get some pics taken and loaded. I made some repairs to my mold but realistically, i'm better off leaving it along. I simply didn't use enough latex, and I didn't mix one of the applications well enough causing these impurfections. That's okay, I can deal with this type of problem easily. This is with two layers of fiberglass and mesh. I will do one more then look it over. If it looks good, i'm gonna pull it tonight!
