littledragon88's See-Threepio

Here are two pictures from yesterday's first dress up with all the droid parts (except the small greeblies and pistons which I still have to install).

Fits quite good, but the shorts pinches a bit at the bottom..
occasionally when I try to move.

I've been following your blog and you are doing some great work and making good progress. One thing you and I have for a disadvantage is our height. We have to balance that space between our torso and shorts. Yours looks pretty good. However the space between the crotch and upper thigh is creating the gap.

Mr. Tea added some length to his shorts (on the crotch sides) after cutting too much off. but the other thing that helped was he widened the thighs by cutting the back and re-fiberglassing over the gap. it will allow a little more room for the shorts, and that could also help prevent the pinching. This might be the solution you need. See his web page. [sign in to see URL]
Keep up the hard work, it's looking good!

@Waldo Kent: Hm, I have already widened my shorts on each side of my hips. I must admit that my butt has been a bit too large for the fiberglass shorts as they were originally. But now it fits just fine.

The space between shorts and upper thighs is kind of annoying, I trimmed away about 1.5 inches to make it fit like it does now. Before I trimmed it, the shape was such that I couldn't put the thighs on at all. As seen on the picture below:

I am planning to get the suit VM'd in january in Beijing, so I am super-stressed. I got a plane for Beijing on the 20th of december, so I have to get stuff done till [sign in to see URL] explains why I am trying to work as fast as I do now. :S.

When looking back now, I think it would've been much wiser to trim too little than too much, and do multiple tests with tht thighs to find the optimal trim-shape.

@Matthew: My shorts are in fiberglass. My helmet is made in ABS, but I've made some "registration" tabs which helps tuck the front face into the back-helmet. Your plan with the L-bracket sounds really interesting, but my problem is that I already have a fiberglass tab there, and I am not sure if I can remove this that easily. Most likely, I think I'm just going to use velcro of some kind, together with the bolts and hope for the best. But I will keep your L-bracket solution into account, because I think yours is the best permanent solution so far.

I am located in Norway, not UK unfortunately emoticon. My height is [sign in to see URL].

Re: littledragon88's See-Threepio

Just left my Threepio at the chroming workshop here in Beijing. In about 1-2 weeks time, it will be spray chromed with a similar system as Spectra-chrome. At last after almost half a year, there will be some serious progress with the suit. Stay tuned for updates when I get all the parts back!

FYI: I went for a silverish-golden tint on the right shin and foot instead of the typical silver version. I found this being an interesting solution, and I am yet to see the results.

Re: littledragon88's See-Threepio

I am still waiting for the last parts to be shipped from Beijing. All parts are now fully spray chromed. However, due to a bit too much heat in the paint curing process, my ABS helmet and styrene shoe shells have deformed slightly. The front of the ABS helmet has the most extensive deformation, which require me to use a heating source to try to "bend" back.

But it seems the build should be on track, it's gonna be fun to start working on the details and soft-parts!
