Re: Check out this chrome / gold film vinyl

It looks promising, but I don't think this material will work on areas like the bicep detail, legs / knees, belly detail etc. I think those spots are so small and detailed, it will be hard to get it into the nooks and crannies.

Looking forward to someone trying, but I think it might be good for fixes since the color is a bit off. Still waiting for a gold magic bullet! emoticon

Yup, I'd tend to agree with you.

I think Fanta chromed is the same technic as Cosmic Chrome, in which a base coat is applied, then the chrome is "Sprayed" onto that, then a clear topcoat with tint to give it the gold finish.

Hello builders. I've been lurking for a while. I'm actually fabricating a trident, belt and buckle for an Aquaman costume for NYCC. I purchased the 3m film and worked on the trident last night. It's made of PVC pipe, with apoxie sculpt tips, bondo'ed smooth, then primer, then gloss black.

Things I may have done wrong: I used a heat gun. I'm thinking it got too hot. Not necessarily for the film, but the heat pulled up, or melted, some of the paint job. No good.

I also did not use any adhesive primer. I am now convinced this is crucial for success. The film just didn't seem to adhere well, or take a compound curve well.

Finally, all of the youTube vids show tutorials on large, stationary car parts. I found it quite difficult to work on a smaller, loose object.

Discouraged, but not ready to quit....

DON'T use adhesive primer except when the film wraps around a major undercut or returns around an edge (hidden area where your film will stop). It makes it almost impossible to re-position the wrap if you end up with a wrinkle.

Heat gun is a must for setting the material to shape and getting a good stretch but easy to over do it. Without seeing what went wrong it's hard to give a good critique as to what happened.

The film does grab better to smoother surfaces so be sure to give it a good wet sand.

I'm working on a chrome method that's MUCH easier right now. The tutorials will be done soon. HERE

and updates with some GOLD TESTS, (I've figure out which one I'll be using for my suit since this video. updates to come...)
