Belly Wires!

My C3PO is still a work in progress. So far he's a DP body, pelvis and legs, a Zorg head, and more accurate feet from another source. The torso and pelvis was one piece when I got it, but I wanted my Threepio to be more posable, so I cut out the resin midsection. I replaced it with some rubber matting I found at Home Depot that had the correct pattern.
Image
I cut the mat to the right width, with a small section about 3" wide so cover the seam from the inside, and glued it together. In addition to using glue, I "sewed" it together by cutting matching rows of holes every 1/4 or so where the ends meet. The large red bundle of wires at the back lies directly over the seam.
Image
I used plastic wire ties. I pushed the tie through the back side of the mat, then stitched it through the other side. Before pulling the tie tight, I inserted the bundle of wire. After pulling the wire tie tight, the mat was stitched together with a bundle of wires directly over the seam. I repeated this all the way down the seam.

I attached all the other bundles of wire with black or white wire ties, trying to match up the appearance as best I could to ANH.

My Threepio is a display piece, as I would never be able to fit in it anyway!emoticon This method might could be used for a costume, but the rubber is awfully stiff, and you would need a layer of something to keep the wire ties for scratching you. I still plan on adding a few more connectors and such. I didn't like the detail on the DP arms so I'm scratchbuilding a set, so Threepio is unarmed at the moment. emoticon

Hope this belly wire tutorial is helpful to some of you!
