Re: pics of my other (lol) project Optimus Prime
right guys, ive cracked on with the arm and heres the latest pics,
first i primed and fillered the arm and added a cross setion with a bolt inserted, this will allow the arm inserts to rest on and the hands to screw on, the reason im doing screw on hands is so i can change the hands holding different things etc
then i added all the detail like i did with the shoulder joint, and then covered in primer, then added some more raised detail using styrene, and also added some bolts to match the cab too,
once happy, i coated in red, about 5 coats, flatted the final coat with 1200 wet nd dry and soapy water and polished like mad, also painted arm insert, and added chrome detail, and joint for arm was painted in black hammered hamerite too,
then i went about joining the arm pieces, drill 2 holes either side of joint, and cut some tin, similar to how i did primes faceplate,
final chrome detail was added, and insert was slotted in place too,
just got add the yellow arrow nd blocks on the arm, next job the other arm, phew!!!!!
happy building guys

Re: pics of my other (lol) project Optimus Prime
well folks, heres my next post, good day today, heres my progress pics.
shoulder joints made using sugar jar lids, 2 square wood ones, and 2 round ali ones, basically cut the square lid so that the round one would fit over, and because the ali lids had a plastic insert its aloud me to set one joint back slightly, coated in hamerite and the ali polished up on my buffing wheel.
holes drilled through shoulder joints and through body, threaded rod put through body, similar to r2's legs,
now ive change the arm slightly, using the holes id drilled for the smoke stack, i drilled right through the arm and this allows me to lock the arms on and hide the bolts in the smoke stacks, as i want to be able to take prime to pieces to be able to move him around etc.
hes going to be a big guy, prob round 6'9.
happy building guys

Re: pics of my other (lol) project Optimus Prime
hi brad
as always, thanks for your comments, the red i use is a paint by plasticote, its an enamel spray, can take a few days to dry properly, it can be used on kids toys etc, gos on really lovely too, its a thick paint so covers well, and is touch dry in an hour, i used the plasticote white on r2, whens its dry, really dry, it gos really hard(being enamel) but to get a good shine i tend to wet and dry with 1200 and soapy water,my last coat once its been dry for a few days, then buff up with a cutting compound and wax,
hope this helps

Re: pics of my other (lol) project Optimus Prime
hi guys
sorry about the delays in updates, been a hectic few weeks, kids off school, seriously ate into my robot building time LOL! Brad as always thanks for the kind words, heres some new pics,(at last!!!)
right i decided to tackle the mid section, now i was at first going to paint this, but i decided to cover in tin, similar to how i did primes face plate, first thing was to tidy up the areas i needed to with filler etc
then started covering in tin, now this has taken me weeks, A)because i ran out of biscuit tins, so i had to run round all the charity shops looking for some more, B) because i wanted to cover the whole of the mid section, i had a hell of a lot of tin to cut and shape. all tin was stuck on using epoxy,
once completly covered, i then had to go about removing all the sticky finger marks, glue and rough edges, out came the sander,
next job, a good polish!!!! onto the buffing wheel.
once happy i went about adding some detail, using car chrome trim, and some extra aliminium plates down the sides, and some bolts for further detail too,
just got to add some yellow detail in the blank square spaces, and paint the bottom the same blue as primes head.
happy building guys,
colin
