Quick question

Hello, I am trying to take on the project of constructing a helmet used by the Daft Punk duo, and was directed here by a member over at TDH, who had said a member here had made one. It seems you have recently moved, and the thread is lost, so I was just wondering if it was possible to revive that thread, or point me to the member?

Thanks!

Re: Quick question

That would be me!

My Thomas Bangalter (aka the silver robot of the two) replica helmet is basically a heavily heavily heavily modified baseball helmet made with fiberglass and bondo.

I have contributed to a thread on the French Touch Forums in the English section entitled "Helmets" and it documents my process in some amount of detail starting around the second or third page. You need to make an account on there though to view and threads, and it might be a little confusing if you do not speak French.

I was never completely satisfied with my helmet though, after a while I started noticing flaws (mouth to wide, head too big, etc). So I am now currently in the process of making a new hopefully better looking one. Once I have something worth showing I will be posting updates on the forum mentioned above.

Also some day I would like to make a Guy-Man (aka the gold one) Helmet, but that for now is a little outside of my skill set.

Ah! Sweet! That helmet is ace! Yes, I was planning on doing Thomas' too. Guy Manuel's would cost way too much, and is way too much for me to handle. Thanks for the link. I'm guessing you're wolf_boy2027, with C3PO wearing the baseball helmet? emoticon

I'm currently reading through the thread you pointed me to. Do you happen to have any measurements, etc.?

Again, thanks! This is awesome.

Re: Quick question

With my current Helmet I was going for the look of their newer LED-less helmets:

My next helmet though I want to do it based off of there older helmets (the smiling LED one)

Hey Chris, does your brother still do LED stuff? Last time I asked him he denied the project. Could you pull some strings, eh eh? emoticon I'd love to get something just as simple as a row of LEDs like in the picture you posted.

UtherX, yes, wolf_boy2027 is my non star wars message board handle, so all those pictures are of my helmet in the making of process (including the c-3po head wearing the baseball helmet emoticon) are mine

As far as measurements go... I have none, I eyeballed the whole thing (which is why its a little miss shapin), but I am going to make some for my new helmet that I am building so, if you can wait a week or two my new blue prints should be up. Also if you are going to go out and buy a baseball helmet, you might wanna re think it.

I hate this picture, its the worst angle to look at the helmet from. Anyway:

I have found that a baseball helmet when looking at it from the side is not very round (as seen above) unlike the real helmet, so this time around I am going to buy a football helmet as it would seem they have a better curve to them than baseball helmets. Its the wrong season though for buying football supplies so eBay here I come.

BTW... The santa claus thing, I went into school on the last day before winter break as Daft Santa, and that's when those pictures were taken. So no, I do not randomly go out in santa suits. The girl is my special some one.

Yeah, I wasn't planning to buy a baseball helmet, or any helmet for that matter. I just think that the baseball helmet is too tall compared to the real deal. I was contemplating making a rough dome out of cardboard or something, using the whole diamond-shaped/crown type fiasco. Then slathering it in bondo and rounding it out. I've not worked with bondo before though, so it will be an enriching process. How much bondo should I get? How much is it?

I plan on going for the older, smiling helmet also.

I was also thinking about maybe dissecting red rope light, and just rearranging the LEDs, but I'm not so sure about how well that would work, or the setup of the wiring, etc.

Re: Quick question

Well, The older Discovery period light up helmets were built on top of motorcycle helmets, but for me its harder to find second hand motor cycle helmets that come remotely close to fitting my head, that's why I am pursuing sports helmets. I'm hoping the football helmets will eliminate the Frankenstein tall head thing since they are more round, but who knows.

Bondo is kind of tricky to jump into with no prior experience or knowledge ahead of time. you might want to buy small amounts of bondo and harder first to kinda get an idea of what you are getting into before you;ve spent a lot of money. Also Cardboard and Bondo with no support is not the best combo. Bondo is intended for being put on sturdy pieces of metal and stuff, not flimsy cardboard which leads to cracking and chipping. This is why the inside of my helmet has a coat or two of fiberglass. Maybe there are some tutorials on youtube that could be helpful for you.

But don't get me wrong, bondo can have beautiful results when used properly, which can be seen by a fellow on here making a C-3PO suit from scratch out of it. Really awesome stuff.

I'm assuming you are not willing to settle for paper mache emoticon

Also thanks for the link Chris, but do you think your bro would be willing do something like this sweeping KITT/Cylon set up? For a price of course? Or anyone for that matter? Could you point me in some sort of direction?
