Re: 3d Printed Parts

Thanks!
I filled them with polyester resin last night. The material is so thin that it's slightly porous. The resin sort of "sweated" through to the outside. The stuff that cured on the exterior of the piece actually chipped away really easily but it lessened the amount of resin inside, which I had carefully measured so now I need to do some trickery to fill a small void. Probably inject a little epoxy resin... otherwise came out pretty good. I'm going to prime and paint them and see how they look....

All of the links to finished items are in the first post on this thread.

I so have arm pistons posted but I haven't purchased a set yet to check them out. If you want to get a set and check them out let me know and I'll PM you a link.

For your styrene head I have a few different sizes.
Did you already cut out the eye holes?

If you haven't cut them out yet, one of the FAC style would probably be best.

If you have cut them, check the diameter of the holes. I think the resin eyes that normally come with the starbuckcylon masks are 1.5" (that's what came with my fiberglass version from him) These looked too big me.

I like the look of the zorg and FAC, which are the same diameter at the opening but the FAC eyes have a little lip close to the front that would be good for mounting with the styrene face. (looks the same as zorg eyes from the outside)

I'm not sure if shapeways offers a gold material. I have only used the white. The do the same material in a few colors though. When you go to the link, look on the right side of the page and there'll be more material options.

Hi Gordon , thanks for reply yes I already cut eyes out and yes 1.5 they are. The fac ones look ideal what's the size of them, I could fill in the eyes if needed that lip on the end will make a big difference regarding fitting. Have you seen anything done in the gold glossy material as was thinking of ordering some in that or should I go for the plain and get them plated along with suit.... Thanks for your regarding all the above and yes plz send me link for pistons if possible ....

That's what I did on my fiberglass version. I opened the holes up to 1.5" then decided I wanted a smaller style eye and filled it back in.
If you're going through all that trouble, you may as well get the zorg style. The way they fit is really nice and, if your mask is set up for them, they won't move around as easily.
Basically you'll need to make a bit of a "tube" from the existing eye holes. Here's a photo of how I did mine.

Image

The flange at the back of the eye grill meets up with the back of the tube to keep them from sliding too far forward.
The eyes slide in perfectly and don't wobble around or get crooked.

Got the chest greeblie and hand pistons in today. Guys, if you are on the fence about these, don't be. I work on plenty of resin and fiberglass parts and rarely are the parts ever as crisp as these. These parts are beautiful and will make for a nice upgrade on my 3pO. The only downside I've seen so far is waiting for the other parts~ emoticon

Awesome! Glad you like them and thanks for the kind words! If you have photos of the chest greeblie, I would love to see. I haven't had a chance to see one yet. Planning on getting one with my next order.
What material did you go with?

For links to available models, I just put some of the items in a store on shapeways. The link is at the bottom of the first post in the thread.

The "in progress" versions will be posted as "BETAxx.xx", which should still look good and work fine but there's a good chance those models will end up with some sort of updates and/or improvements in the future.

What size are the Smaller eyes as I'm unsure which are close to the original plus the part to look out are not inline that well with my pupils. Has anyone had them done in the gold finish as the price is a big difference not that bothers me but wondering wether to buy basic and plate them with suit ?.?

I would just get them chromed with the suit.
Good luck getting them to line up perfectly with your eyes. There's a good chance it won't happen but you'll get used to it pretty quick. emoticon

As for the dimensions, I used the same dimensions that were posted when Moncal was doing run of their super nice brass eyes.

I just tried to find the post again but didn't have much luck. I may have it saved someplace but it'll take a little digging around to find it....

Basically,
The zorg and FAC look the same from the outside.
The 1.5" are bigger.
Here's a 1.5" compared to one of my Moncal brass Zorg style eyes.

Image

The 1.5" gives threepio a slightly more "surprised" look.

Pretty sure I posted this somewhere above but I'll be doing another version soon that are the same diameter as the zorg eyes but shorter from front to back like the 1.5 in the photo.
I think the shorter eye tubing gives slightly better visibility than a deeper set eye tube. Just a hunch. emoticon
