V.I.N.CENT. from "The Black Hole". Finally finished!

Hey everybody! I started building a replica of V.I.N.CENT. from "The Black Hole" last year. The first photo is the actual prop from Planet Hollywood. For the head on mine I used a couple of squirrel baffels for bird feeders, and for the main body I had a plastic dome custom blown. The hat is PVC pipe and resin cast from a grill lid. I just about went nuts trying to figure out the dimensions for all the little white panels on the upper body. Building an Artoo unit was a piece of cake compared to this!
Image
V.I.N.CENT. is 33 inches high (legs retracted) and about 26.75 inches wide. The head is 15" in diameter, and the "hat" is 18 inches in diameter. I took several views of V.I.N.CENT. and printed them out at 1/4 actual size. As far as the off-white body panels, I had to extrapolate the measurements from the photos, and every time I made a correction I had to move everything! That was the biggest headache! I plan on reinforcing everything with a couple of layers of fiberglass from the inside, so he ought to be pretty tough when I get done! To give you a better idea of the size, here's V.I.N.CENT. with a friend, Lessa, one of my best friend's kids. She thinks he's pretty cool.emoticon

I had a chance to do a little experimenting with the painting technique for V.I.N.CENT.. I used a rough sea sponge and stippled plain old Testor's silver enamel over a black finish. I may have gotten it a bit heavy in areas, but this was just a test. I think I have it VERY close, but somehow it still looks a little off. It could be different lighting conditions, could be they used a warmer shade of silver/aluminum/steel for the metal. Here's a couple of pics comparing the original with my experiment.

Here's some candid shots of V.I.N.CENT. with a pole up his butt.

I finally got the head painted, although this is just a basecoat the see how he'll look finished. I'm still working on the ears. The screws in the haed will be countersunk and smoothed over.
Image
I've finally gotten almost all of the panel lines scribed, which was a nightmare, trying to dremmel into acrylic without damaging it! I still have to bondo a few surface areas where the dremmel drifted a bit.
Image
The tan area on his backside is rigid expandable foam. I'm having to reshape these areas, and I've found the easiest way is to foam the area, carve and sand it to shape, then fiberglass it. This is how I finally got the gunboxes shaped. The one on the other side still needs a little refining.
Image
Univers is the correct font for the labeling on the panels. . I printed up two complete sets of decals (an extra in case I need it) and I think they will work.

The lettering for the "V.I.N.CENT. L.F.396" is 3/4 inch Roman Stencil.
Image
And I finally figured out the spacing for the white and silver blocks on the "legs". I think I have the shape of the bottom panel, sort of an "upside-down hoodscoop" very close. Here's a shot of the decals.

Hopefully I'm in the home stretch! What do you think?

Are you going to have extending appendages or anything like that?

Hi! I'm hoping to at some point. I'd like to have telescoping arms in the front and the lasers at least. Not really sure how to actuate them, I'm just sort of making up everything as I go. emoticon

Here's some new pics of V.I.N.CENT. I think I've just about got all the surface contours right, now all I have to do is smooth out all the surface flaws and rescribe a few panel lines.

Looks great! Personally, I'm more interested in the belly wires you have on your 3po - those look fantastic - have you posted pics of those yet?

Hey, Chris!

Thanks for the kind words! I had some pics of Threepio's belly wires on the old board, I'll try to find them and repost!

This looks awesome! Great job. Great detail. I always thought V.I.N.C.E.N.T was a very likeable character, but I haven't seen the movie in - well, since it was released in the theaters actually. I look forward to seeing your completed project. It'll be a fantastic addition to your collection. Just out of curiousity, how wide across is this thing?

(off topic, but kinda cute - my daughter looks a bit like the little girl in one of the pics - about the same age, similar hair, etc, and she was looking at the screen just now and said "is that me?")

Hey, GBVader!
I look forward to seeing my project completed too! emoticon I've got a little more work done on him, just a little more sanding and detailing to go! I test painted a section, to simulate the hammered metal finish he had in the movie, and he looks pretty much spot on. I'll try to get some fresh pics up in the next few days, thanks for the kind comments! That is pretty cute, your daughter thinking it was her on the computer!
